APAC National Facility
Call for Applications to the Merit Allocation Scheme
including:
- Computational Projects on the APAC National Facility
and APAC National Grid, and
- Data Projects on APAC National Facility.
Period: Jan 2007 - Dec 2007.
Closing Date for applications is 6 November 2006.
(This call is available on the web at
http://nf.apac.edu.au/accounts/call_for_applications.php
Please pass this email on to any potential NEW applicants.)
The APAC National Facility provides internationally competitive computational services for Australian researchers.
The APAC partners also provide mid-range computational systems for
the use of researchers within the partner organisation. Users can
access the National Facility or Partner facilities either directly or via National Grid middleware.
The APAC Merit Allocation Scheme provides resources on the National
Facility and the National Grid to projects based on merit. The scheme
also provides data resources on the National Facility.
Applications are called for grants for computational and data
resources under this scheme for the period of Jan 2007 - Dec 2007.
The closing date for applications is 6 November 2006.
Note: Smaller 'Start-up Grants' are also available immediately to
enable researchers to assess the usefulness of the National Facility
for their research and to assist in framing proposals to the Scheme.
Resources Available
===================
The major computational resource is at the National Facility. This
peak system is an SGI Altix Cluster with 1928 processors and a peak
speed of over 12 Tflops. A 152 node Linux cluster is also currently
available. Details on these systems can be found at
http://nf.apac.edu.au/facilities/ .
The National Grid includes resources on the APAC partner systems.
These mid-range systems are listed on
http://nf.apac.edu.au/facilities/software/facilities_site.php?site=all
The National Facility also manages a large data system capable of
housing relational databases, on-line and large-scale near-line data, and is currently being augmented to include a data processing capability.
Who May Apply
=============
Any staff member of an Australian Higher Education Institution may
apply to the Merit Allocation Scheme (with certain restrictions
imposed by USA export conditions). Postgraduate students should apply through their supervisors.
The Federal Government may give approval for CSIRO researchers to
obtain resource grants under the Merit Allocation Scheme. CSIRO
researchers may therefore apply to the scheme for such grants. In the event that Government approval is not given, the applications will be forwarded to CSIRO for consideration under their partner share on the
facility.
How to Apply
============
Forms for applications can be found on the web site
http://nf.apac.edu.au/accounts/ .
Forms are provided for:
- Merit Allocation Scheme for Computational projects on the
National Facility and the National Grid
The form can be used to request computational resources on the
National Facility. In addition, this form also allows requests
for resources on your Partner facility.
- Merit Allocation Scheme for Data Projects on the National Facility
- Start-up Grants for computational and data projects on the National
Facility
Applicants should read the policies and guidelines. The criteria for
evaluating proposals can be found at http://nf.apac.edu.au/policies/ .
Proposals should be made to the Merit Allocation Scheme now, but in special circumstances may be made at any time.
Advice and Support
==================
Advice on completing the forms may be obtained from the National
Facility. APAC National Facility staff are also available to discuss
the suitability of the National Facility and its environment to the
proposed project, or advise if other facilities might be more
appropriate. They are also available to help with the installation
and optimisation of programs and other software.
