Installing MATLAB on your Computer

The Matlab license is purchased for University research activities, and is made available for any researcher connected to the UQ network. The list of currently available features (toolboxes) is available at http://www.hpcu.uq.edu.au/hpc/content/view/200/34/.

The license may also be used at home or when at conferences, by connecting with the UQ VPN network client software.

Please note that for teaching use, an alternate classroom license is also available. Please contact us for further details.

What you will need

  • The installation software.
    • For popular versions the software is made available from the University's secure software download site (https://www.uq.edu.au/secure/software/ ).
    • Due to space considerations, the 64bit linux version is not currently available online.
    • The installation DVDs may also be borrowed by contacting the ITS helpdesk.
  • The File Installation Key code that corresponds to the software version.
    • From release 2008a all platforms require this installation code (previously the PLP code required only for Windows).
    • The current FIK codes may be obtained here if you log- in (at left).
  • The license which contains the two lines below. The link is only visible here if you log- in (at left).Save the configuration file to your computer.
Visible only if you log in (at left).
  • If you are teaching with MatLab (i.e. your usage is not for research or commercial work) you are entitled to use the classroom license. Presently, there are 50 seats in that license pack. You will not have access to any of the specialised toolboxes that are available with the research license.  Use the same license file provided above, however you need to change the port number from 1711 to 1713.

Install the software

  1. Insert the DVD or unpack the software and run the installer.
  2. Select "Install manually without the Internet"
  3. Under Linux, you must then provide a root directory path for the intallation.
  4. If prompted select "I have the File Installation Key for my license"
  5. Enter the FIK code available above.
  6. Under Windows a "Typical" installation is recommended. Then provide the installation directory path.
  7. Under Linux, you will be offered a list of Matlab components and should remove "License Manager".
  8. When prompted for the License file location, provide the path to the two line license configuration file you saved from "What you will need".
  9. MAC USERS - Installation from Web file: Some installer files are extracted to incorrect locations, preventing the installer from finding any Matlab components to install. After expanding the Zip file and then the MacInstaller "tar" file, move the "Installer" Application folder and the "update" folder up one directory level prior to running.
  10. MAC USERS - Installation from Original DVD: The 2008a installer fails to copy the license file into place. You will need to manually copy the licence file to file : "/Applications/MATLAB_2008a/licenses/network.lic"
  11. LINUX USERS: if you have zip zip file containing a file boot.ftp then: unpack the zip file in some new/empty directory and within that directory execute the command 'tar -xf boot.ftp. Then run the 'install' program.
